Ham Radio Emergency Communication at South Cental Neighborhood Council's Emergency Preparedness Fair, Feb. 10, 2007 On an unusually hot Februrary 17, 2007, Saturday, in the South Central region of the City of Los Angeles, the South Central Neighborhood Council, the neighborhood governmental body, held a disaster preparedness fair. South Central's Secretary of the Board, Daymond Johnson, asked Cliff Cheng, PhD, KI6CM, who amongst other volunteer activities wrote a website to educate neighbors about emergency communication, www.NERP.myEweb.net, to arrange for an emergency communication demostration. Cliff contacted Joe Provenza, w6UPN, ARES DEC, who bought John Rogers, KF6TTR and Dino Kitsios, KF6ECO and their Long Beach ARES emergency communication van. The people of South Central were warm and receptive. They donated 2 cases of emergency supplies to the Long Beach van and treated us to lunch. Daymond wants to get his ham license. We had a nice visit with our counterparts at the LA Sheriff's Disaster Communication Service. We visited with Ellis Stanley, Jr., General Manager of the LA Emergency Prepreparednes Department, a served agency of ARES'. We spent time getting to know the people at the government agencies we have MOUs to serve in time of emergency. |
